Echo Hill Day One

Hi All,

Here are some pictures of our first day at Echo Hill. We had a nice ride up and then went about our business here at the school. My first class was Bay Studies. We took one of the vintage wooden skipjacks out on the bay and learned about all kinds of things -- fish features, bay history, adaptations, antique and current fishing methods, predator-prey interactions-- it was fantastic, Captain Carrington did a wonderful job.

We caught a 2 foot blue catfish that had been living in an old crab trap on the bottom; our cod net (now outlawed except by special educational permit) pulled up the trap, the catfish, and decaying catfish that the first cat was living off of.

A bit disgusting, but awesome nevertheless. We caught a Blue Crab (too small to eat), a bunch of white perch, a couple of pumpkinseeds and a couple of American eels.

Capt. Carrington and 1st Mate Molly told us the story of how all American eels travel to the Sargasso Sea to mate, and how the European eels make the same trip, but that the two species never interbreed.

What a day. I'm ready to crash. Too much learning.

I like the picture of Oliver and peter with the fish. They were on the class bay studies. I also did bay studies class and I learned about the life of an eal and got to kiss a fish.

I liked the picture of us all looking at the eel, when we were on bay studies. I was with them on bay studies and i thought it was fun because i thought that learning about the eels and all the fish were interesting and also kissing the little fishy.

On the Bay Study Class, we caught all sorts of animals. For example when we used an Illegal net that no one can use except for Echo Hill, we caught a huge catfish and the fish the Oliver and Peter are holding.

We also caught many eels on the bay study as well as the fish that they are holding.

I liked the picture I was in with the counsler holding the eel during a bay studies class. In that class we went fishing and we were very successful because we caught 2 eels one crab and a lot of fish. In the picture our counsler was teaching us about eels.

I REALLY like the picture with Caroline, Sydney, Ana, Evie, Alexis and me. It was taken when we were rosting hot dogs on the beach. It must have been around seven because the sun was setting against the dazzling blue bay. This picture reminds me of hanging out with friends and S.L.O.P. S.L.O.P means stuff left on plate. It was a challenge the counsellors gave us. We weighed the amount of S.L.O.P we had after each meal time and recorded it on a white poster board. I enjoied the idea of not wasting our food and making our enviorment a better place.
